Basically it takes x as much code to do the same thing we did over 30 years ago. How does that happen? Were programmers really times as diligent about being efficient? That's extraordinarily astounding!!
How does that happen?? I'm a computer programmer and I simply can't imagine how that happens. I'm sure the folks who wrote this are every bit as good programmers as I ever was, but I'm still having trouble wrapping my head around this.
GW-BASIC was directly coded in machine code for the , with a lot of time spent on optimising code so it fit into very restricted memory. If you were to rewrite this thing in C and compile you would get something much closer to that, though probably not quite as small. PC-BASIC tries to match this undocumented behaviour exactly, which requires a lot of workarounds as the original intention or underlying structure is unknown.
Does this explain it a bit? Dare say OK for simple games, but not when you really need a pukka Basic interpreter. It's really GeeWhiz Basic! Works just like it too, warts and all - lol. I'm amazed that all the commands work as I remember them. Rob, you have created a true masterpiece here. The depth of the experience is phenomenal.
The editing too! It pops open in a perfect sized 25 line by 80 character "DOS" text screen with a black background and white characters in that old familiar font. Full screen cursor control - even the F keys are on the bottom. I had to look up the "KEY" command to mess with them.
I wrote a lot of programs back in the day in GQ-Basic. This really takes me back and re-sparks my creative urges again. Will there be a place to post our creations for others to review and comment on?
